Just reposting the link to an old set of instructions I wrote for upgrading the Operating system on the Akai S3200XL sampler.
I still have some version 2.0 EPROMs availble – if anyone is interested, drop me a line.
The process allows you to upgrade your Akai sampler from 1.* versions to version 2.0. This emables better SCSI control and interfacting with application slike Mesa, Wavelab etc.

Hi – sorry for the delay getting back to you.
I have now sold the last batch – I’ll be making some more and will let you know when they are ready.
Hi, i’m from Italy and I’m interested in Akai OS 2 EPROMS for Akai s3200xl
Thanks.
HI!
I just got a hold of your TechBlogg concerning the Akai s3200xl
OS 2.0 eeprom hardware upgrade.
Is it still possible to obtain these from You or maybe You could direct me?
I just bought one with OS 1.53.
Regards, Jesper
Sorry, I don’t have an S3200XL to test the EPROM’s with any more.
Hi there. I discovered your blog about the S3200XL eproms. I’m in a predicament, so hear me out:
I have two 16mb flash rom boards for my S3200XL. My S3200XL has the OS v. 1.05, and unfortunately, the S3200XL needs OS v. 1.5 to read the flash roms at all. I’ve got a floppy disk which loads the v 2.0 into the sampler… but there’s still a problem: in order for the progs/samples/etc to be automatically loaded and accessible directly from the flash rom, the sampler has to load an OS from the flash rom itself.
So the problem is that since I don’t have an EPROM with v 1.5 or higher, my flash roms are useless (except for using it like a regular HD). I just spent lots of cash on these rare flash roms so unless I can get an EPROM with v 1.5 or higher, I think that’s money down the drain.
Do you happen to have any EPROMs for the S3200XL left by any chance? Let me know, shoot me an email. Thanks.
Sorry my friend, I have EPROMS but alas no programmer. I’d be happy to fish out an EPROM and see if I can find the program image for you but you’d need to find a way of programming it.
Yeah, it’s looking like I’ll have to buy an entirely new sampler with an EPROM of v. 1.5 or 2.0 to get it working. That, or I’d have to find someone with a programmer. I think I may be able to find someone with one somewhere. Is the program image a cod file? That’s what I loaded onto a floppy via OSMAKER. Thanks for your help, appreciated.
Hey sorry for another comment but I wanted to check on that S3200XL program file. What kind of file is it? I’ve got a .cod file that I use to make a floppy disk with. I’ve located a couple of people with EPROM programmers so I’ll be getting some made shortly.
Can you possibly email me that program? I’d appreciate it, thanks a lot. – Jared
I can’t remember I’ll have to look at my archive.
As I recall I had to modify the floppy image in order to burn to EPROM – nothing too complicated, just some preamble form the file had to be removed.
If I can fish out the modified EPROM image I’ll send it on to you.
Hey man, don’t mean to keep bugging ya but I’ve got some blank EPROMs and a programmer en route. Which software did you use to take out the preamble of the S3200XL OS to get it to function an as EPROM, and exactly which part of it do I need to take out? Appreciate your help man, have $600 worth of a sampler and can’t even use it right yet.
It’s me again. Did you ever find that program? I’m at wit’s end with the sampler and the EPROM issue. I’ve invested over $600 into this sampler so right now it’s a waste unless I get an EPROM image for it. I’ve got a programmer and some EPROMs so I’m ready to go.
I don’t know where else to get the image file and I also don’t know what to edit in the floppy image to get it to work on the EPROM. If you could help out in any way you’d be a lifesaver man. – Jared
Hey it’s me again. I’ve been talking with a sampler/EPROM company and they’re trying to help me figure this out as well. I bought an EPROM from them which they said would work but it doesn’t. They’re going through their old files to see if they can fix something up.
But hey man, I’m seriously willing to give you some Paypal cash if you can dig that old EPROM file out for me. I’ve got a programmer but I’m not sure what to edit in the cod file that I have to get it working and if I’m supposed to use a Hex editor or what. If you can’t find the file I’ll still give you some Paypal cash for telling me what to edit in the file to get it working.
– Jared
Do you know if the S3000XL and the S3200XL use the same EPROM image?
Thanks,
Tony.
don’t know I’m afraid…
Hi Jared,
sorry – been busy and not checking the blog.
Don;t know if you got OS2.0 on your sampler but if not you might be in luck.
I have just found two EPROM’s that I had already put the 2.0 software on in my stash.
Let me know if your still interested and I’ll send you one.
